A Stepped Process

When we plan a home network, we follow a series of detailed steps to ensure optimal performance, coverage, and security. Here’s our approach:

STEP 1: Initial Needs Assessment and Site Survey:

At Select Home Networks, we begin by assessing the client’s needs and conducting a thorough site survey. This involves engaging with the client to understand the number of users, devices, and activities such as streaming, gaming, and remote work. We also identify any specific requirements, like smart home integration or advanced security features. Following the initial consultation, we assess the home layout, noting the number of floors, room sizes, and construction materials, while identifying potential sources of interference such as thick walls, metal structures, and electronic appliances.

STEP 2: Network Design and Equipment Selection

Next, we proceed with network design and equipment selection. We determine the coverage area, identify potential dead zones, and calculate the required bandwidth to support both current and future needs. During the equipment selection process, we choose a router that supports the latest Wi-Fi standards, such as Wi-Fi 6, and select additional devices like mesh Wi-Fi systems or access points for larger or more complex home layouts. Ensuring the compatibility of the equipment with the client’s ISP and desired internet speed is also crucial at this stage.

STEP 3: Installation and Configuration

In the installation and configuration phase, we set up the router and any additional nodes or access points in optimal locations, typically central and elevated spots, to maximize coverage. We connect all devices to the network, using wired connections where possible to reduce wireless congestion. Network configuration includes setting up a unique SSID and a strong password, enabling WPA3 encryption if available, and configuring Quality of Service (QoS) settings to prioritize critical applications like streaming and gaming.

STEP 4: Security and Performance Optimization

Ensuring network security and optimizing performance are integral to our service. We change the default login credentials for all network devices and enable firewall settings on the router. We also set up a guest network to isolate visitor devices from the main network. Performance testing involves conducting speed tests in various locations throughout the home to verify coverage and identifying any weak spots. We make adjustments such as changing Wi-Fi channels to minimize interference and repositioning devices or nodes to improve signal strength.

STEP 5: Client Training and Ongoing Support:

Finally, we provide client training and support. We educate the client on managing and troubleshooting their network, and provide instructions for connecting new devices and maintaining security. Detailed documentation on the network setup, including equipment used and configuration settings, is supplied. We also offer follow-up support to ensure the network performs as expected, and provide ongoing troubleshooting assistance as needed.
